Super Petrel LSA

Super Petrel is an amphibious biplane that is capable of landing on both land and water. Thanks to Roger from Super Petrel USA for letting us check out this aircraft.

Super Petrel is unlike any other sea plane out there, that is also a light sport aircraft. First in the design, this plane has double wings. And the second wing is not just for looks it actually helps stabilize the airplane in flight and in stall situations. The top wing serves more as the stabilize while the bottom shorter wing is the main wing which the aircraft flies on. We practiced stalls on my demo flight and I couldn’t even tell if the airplane was stalling because we were still flying even after those stall horns kept going off.

The cockpit design in the super petrel is also quite different. Since this is a light sport aircraft, you have no mixture or propeller control to worry about. So in the cockpit, all you have are our stick, rudder and power/throttle levers. The throttle lever is on each side of the seats, not in the middle. For those who trained or fly in a traditional airplane, you’re probably used to having your left hand on the stick or yoke, and your control levers being in the middle. When I flew this plane though, the transition was pretty easy. And I should add that this is probably the easiest airplane I’ve flown. It just behaves so well in flight.

Now, who is this aircraft for?

I think it’s for the more relaxed pilot who wants to grab a bite here and there. It is a capable cross country aircraft as it will stay flying for 6 hours if you can take it. Also it uses a small rotax 912 engine which powers you to 80-100 miles per hour in cruise.

The price tag on the Super Petrel is $189,000 and that is all inclusive. You get a fully loaded airplane with a nice Garmin G3X Touch glass panel. The only option for customers are paint color and strips. Every thing else comes standard with your purchase.
