Aircraft ownership is a dream for most pilots. And as you get to that point of flying your own airplane, maintenance is one of the major cost one needs to consider. More specifically your engine maintenance cost.
For certified aircraft engines, we have what you call a TBO or time before overhaul. What that means is that the engine manufacturer tell you that that engine needs to be overhauled at a specific time of use (usually 2,000 hours for piston engines).
An engine overhaul cost ranges from $15,000 to $30,000. That’s an expensive part of owning your own airplane. Now, with alternative auto engines like the ones offered at Viking aircraft engine, or other auto converted engines, this cost is not the same. As you will listen in the in the video, Jan explains the idea behind overhauling an engine. This was a safety measure set by the FAA to govern aircraft usage and maintenance of those aircraft, especially if you are using it for commercial purposes.
If you opt in for an auto converted car engine for your airplane. You technically wouldn’t have an overhaul cost to worry about as long as you properly use and maintain the engine.
