Private Helicopters Are Cheaper to Own

The Federal Aviation Administration is coming out with a new set of rules that will take effect in the private world of aviation. The Mosaic rules being proposed by the FAA can help reduce the price of buying and owning an airplane more particularly airplanes in the experimental category. But just like you have experimental fixed-swing airplanes you also have experimental helicopters and we’ve covered a few of them on MojoGrip.

First that comes to mind is the mosquito

This is a one-sitter helicopter that you generally Fly for Fun but also you can fly this helicopter to build time real time so with the mosquito you have a piston engine version and you have a turbine engine version if you were to opt for the turbine engine you can build actual turbine hours in this experimental helicopter and it will cost you a fraction of what it will cost to fly a turboprop. If you were to purchase a mosquito helicopter you’d spend anywhere from fifty thousand dollars to maybe eighty thousand dollars for this helicopter. You have to be within 300 pounds to fly this helicopter and you only have about an hour or two hours to fly but because of the size of the helicopter and the size of the engine you’re burning a fraction of the fuel compared to flying a fixed wing turboprop aircraft.

Another helicopter that we’ve checked out on MojoGrip is the hx50 from Hill helicopters

This is not a helicopter that’s out yet it’s still in research and development stage but man what they have right now is they can come to Market with this product it will completely change the landscape if you watch the video I did uncovering this helicopter this is a machine that is comparable with say the Robinson r66 turbine helicopter and that bird costs about a million dollars whereas the hx50 will cost you less than seven hundred thousand dollars and you can go further you can go faster at 140 knots and you can carry a lot more people. This helicopter has five seats and you can actually carry five people with full fuel. It may not be for the average Joe at $700,000.

Experimental helicopters, also known as kit-built helicopters or homebuilt helicopters, can be relatively inexpensive compared to commercially manufactured helicopters. This is because they are often constructed by hobbyists or aviation enthusiasts who purchase kits and assemble the aircraft themselves.

However, it is important to note that experimental helicopters still require a significant investment of time, effort, and money to construct and maintain. The cost of the kit itself can range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on the complexity and features of the aircraft. In addition, there may be significant costs associated with obtaining necessary licenses, certifications, and insurance.

Furthermore, experimental helicopters may not have the same level of reliability or safety features as commercially manufactured helicopters, and their performance may vary depending on factors such as weather and altitude. As such, it is important to thoroughly research and understand the risks and requirements before embarking on a project to build or fly an experimental helicopter.
